Plugins

Plugins add things that sit alongside playback rather than being part of it.

A music source brings music in. A player provider sends it out to a speaker. A plugin does something else entirely: it might host a party your guests queue tracks from, run a music quiz on the TV, let another app send audio to Music Assistant over AirPlay or DLNA, or report what you played to Last.fm.

Plugins are optional. Music Assistant works perfectly well without any of them.

Adding a plugin

Go to Settings → Plugins → Add a plugin and pick one from the list. Every plugin has its own page in this section covering what it does and how to configure it.

Some plugins depend on something else being set up first. The Home Assistant plugin needs a Home Assistant instance it can connect to, and AI Radio needs the Home Assistant plugin to reach an AI and text-to-speech service.

Finding something to play

• AI Radio Turn a playlist into a radio show with an AI host, or let an AI DJ talk over the queue you are already playing.
• Library Recommendations Fill the Discover page with rows drawn from your own library and what you have been playing. Built in and always on.
• Smart Playlists Create dynamic playlists based on rules from your library or from music discovered via seed tracks, artists, albums, or playlists.
• Sonic Similarity Local similarity search powering library-wide Similar Tracks, Endless Mix, an "Inspired by recently played" discover row, and natural-language search.

Playing to Music Assistant from something else

• AirPlay Receiver Make your players appear as AirPlay devices, so anything that can send to AirPlay can play on them.
• AriaCast Receiver Send audio from an Android device to any of your players.
• Plex Connect Put your players in the device list of Plex clients such as Plexamp. Needs the Plex music source.
• Sendspin Source Bring a turntable, microphone or line-in on a Sendspin device into Music Assistant as a Live Input.
• Spotify Connect Put your players in the official Spotify app's device list, like a Spotify Connect speaker.
• VBAN Receiver Let another computer send its sound across the network and play it on your speakers, like an aux input.
• Yandex Music Connect (Ynison) Put your players in the official Yandex Music app. Needs the Yandex Music source.

Listening with other people

• Music Quiz Host multiplayer music quiz games with QR-code guest access, shared or remote playback, and several game types.
• Party Let guests queue songs from their phones by scanning a QR code, with no account and no access to your system.

Enhancing with lights and visuals

• Hue Lights Sync Make your Philips Hue lights change colour in time with whatever is playing.
• MilkDrop Visualizer Render a MilkDrop (Butterchurn) music visualizer behind the now-playing views, reacting live to the audio.

Reporting what you played

• LastFM Scrobbler Scrobble what you play to LastFM or LibreFM.
• Listenbrainz Scrobbler Scrobble what you play to Listenbrainz.
• Subsonic Scrobbler Report what you play to a Subsonic media server, so its play counts and history stay right.

Connecting to other systems

• FastMCP Server Offer your library, queue and players over the Model Context Protocol, so an AI assistant can search and control them.
• Home Assistant Reach into Home Assistant to link entities to player controls, and to use its AI and text-to-speech services in Music Assistant.
• OpenAI Compatible Use OpenAI, Groq, OpenRouter, Together or a local AI server such as Ollama or LM Studio for Music Assistant's AI features.
• Yandex Smart Home Add your players to Yandex Smart Home, so Alice can control them by voice.

Diagnostics

• Profiler Record what the server is doing as one report to attach to a bug report. Add it when a maintainer asks, then remove it again.
